The story follows the lives of plane crash Oceanic Air Flight 815 survivors on Pacific island on September 22, 2004. The island hold many mysterious secrets, including a mysterious smoker monster, polar bears, housing with electricity, hold and cold running water, the residents of the island known as “The Others”, and the mysterious man Jacob. The survivors also find signs of those who came to the island before them, including a 19th century sailing ship called The Black Rock and the ruins of an ancient statue, as well as bunkers belonging to the DHARMA Initiative -- a group of scientific researchers who inhabited the island in the recent past. Each episode typically features a primary storyline on the island as well as a secondary storyline from another point in a character's life, though other time-related plot devices change this formula in later episodes.
